Sanitary District Completes Major Project
PRESS RELEASE: August 23, 2007
North Andover, MA – On September 26, 2007 the Greater Lawrence Sanitary District will be marking the completion of Phase I of its Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement project. A dedication and small reception will be held for state and local officials and other invited guests.
Combined sewer overflows (or "CSO"s) are wet-weather related discharges that contribute to reduced water quality in the Merrimack River. The completion of the Phase I project will allow the District to increase its wet weather flow treatment capacity and reduce CSOs.
With completion of this upgrade, the number of local CSO events should decrease from 14 to 5 CSO events per year. The volume of wet weather flows captured for treatment should increase to 99%. This anticipated reduction in the number of overflow events will translate to better water quality for the Merrimack.
